Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Addresses Hot Topics

Behavioral health and cultural competence are just a few of the emerging topics that will be addressed at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 2019 Food & Nutrition Conference & ExpoTM  October 26 to October 29 in Philadelphia, Pa.

More than 10,000 registered dietitian nutritionists, nutrition science researchers, policy makers, health care providers and industry leaders from around the world are expected to convene at the Pennsylvania Convention Center for the world’s largest conference of food and nutrition professionals. The Academy’s annual conference features more than 130 cutting-edge nutrition science research and educational presentations, panel discussions and culinary demonstrations.

This year’s program debuts the Conversation Series that brings experts, Academy leaders and innovators together for in-depth, one-on-one conversations about emerging technologies and breakthroughs.

A new Controversies in Practice series will provide guidance on hot-button issues including detoxification, the ketogenic diet and new research on alcohol consumption.

Sunday, October 27

  • 8 - 9:30 a.m.: New Innovations to Tap Nature’s Diversity for Tomorrow’s Food Products  Presenters will discuss the process, risks and benefits of modifying food genomes to produce better foods.  
  • 3:30 - 5 p.m.: Debate: The Effects of a Ketogenic Diet on Exercise Metabolism during Endurance Performance – Point-Counterpoint  Presenters will debate the efficacy and safety of following a ketogenic diet for clients who participate in endurance sports.  

Monday, October 28

  • 1:30 - 3 p.m.: Building Cultural Humility in a Globalized World  Presenters will address navigating the complexities of race, ethnicity, culture and personal biases to improve client treatment.
  • 3:30 - 5 p.m.: Detoxification: Evaluating the Science and Implications for Practice  Presenters will assess the science and evidence behind detoxification and evaluate how to use these assessments to help registered dietitian nutritionists treat their clients.

Tuesday, October 29

  • 9:45 - 11:15 a.m.: The Autism MEAL Plan: Empowering Caregivers to Feed in Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder  Presenters will discuss the Autism MEAL plan, which teaches caregivers how to introduce new foods and provide nutritionally balanced meals to children with autism spectrum disorders who are picky eaters.  
  • 12 - 1:30 p.m.: Controversies in Practice: Alcohol – To Drink or Not to Drink  The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans outline how alcohol can fit into a healthful meal plan. Presenters will discuss recent meta-analysis that argues this guidance should be re-evaluated.
